About this game
The emergencies that kill cancer patients are recognition problems. The diagnosis is made on a blood film, a chemistry panel and a story, hours before anything on a monitor changes. TTP, HUS, HIT, tumour lysis, leukostasis and the brain metastasis that presents as a headache all share headline findings and separate on a handful of discriminating features. Sort them fast, and say what you are sorting on.
What you will practice
- Separate the thrombotic microangiopathies from the other causes of a low platelet count
- Name the discriminating feature you used, not just the diagnosis
- Recognise the emergencies that need treatment before the confirmatory test returns
